How the pension is calculated
An FBiH old-age pension is your personal points multiplied by the general point value. The law states a real minimum AND a real maximum pension as checkable rules — but for both, the reference figure that would turn the rule into a KM amount was not found in this research pass.
This describes the FBiH formula and rules only — it does not apply to Republika Srpska or Brčko (see the Entities page).
The formula: personal points × the general point
The pension is the sum of your personal points (formed from the ratio of your own salary to the FBiH average, per year of service) multiplied by the general point — currently 26,34 KM per point (od 1. januara 2026.). The annual personal coefficient cannot exceed 5 (čl. 46(5)). The law expressly allows the pension service counted toward personal points to exceed 40 years — there is no cap on how many years of service are counted (čl. 44(3)).
No provision was found bounding the CAREER personal coefficient itself, upper or lower — only the annual maximum above is expressly stated.
The general point does NOT move with pensions in payment
The general point is indexed once a year, on 1 January, purely by the prior year’s average gross-wage growth. That is a different mechanism from the indexation of pensions already in payment (twice a year, by a formula blending price and wage change — see the table below). Conflating the two is a common mistake: whatever the point’s own annual change turns out to be, it cannot be derived from the formula that indexes pensions in payment, because it measures something else entirely.
| When the price-change share of the sum is | Wage share | Price share |
|---|---|---|
| under 50 % | 60 % | 40 % |
| 50 % or more | 40 % | 60 % |
The minimum pension — a real rule, no KM figure
čl. 81(2) sets the minimum pension as a share of the average pension paid for December of the prior year, stepped by your own years of pension service — from 60% (under 20 years of service) to 95% (40 years or more). The table below is a real, checkable rule.
| Years of pension service | Share of the average pension paid for December of the prior year |
|---|---|
| under 20 | 60 % |
| from 20 to 25 | 65 % |
| from 25 to 30 | 70 % |
| from 30 to 35 | 75 % |
| from 35 to 40 | 85 % |
| 40 or more | 95 % |
The baseline these percentages apply to — the average pension paid for December of the prior year — currently stands at 651,05 KM (FZ MIOPIO).
There is also a separate "guaranteed pension" for claimants with 40 or more years of service whose computed pension would fall below it (čl. 81(3)) — pinned to the average standalone pension paid for December 2024, carried forward by čl. 79 indexation since. It currently stands at 871,93 KM (FZ MIOPIO).
The maximum pension — the same shape, the same gap
čl. 81(5) sets the maximum pension at five times the lowest pensions from December 2024, carried forward by čl. 79 indexation. It currently stands at 3.450,47 KM(FZ MIOPIO).
Why there is no pension calculator
Your personal coefficient is a whole-career average that only the Fund holds — not something a reader typically has on hand, so this page explains the rules rather than offering a calculator.
FBiH publishes no separate index for restating past earnings in present-day money: each year is already expressed as a ratio to that same year’s average (čl. 46(1)), so there is nothing left to recompute.
